Pop the chassis into the bucket and while the flex is lessened, there is a noticeable amount of give in the back plastic. Outside of the back 'bucket' the chassis can be visibly seen to flex if you put a solid amount of pressure through the device. This makes customization easy, but by focusing on a thin and modern design, the Lumia 535 comes with not a lot of torsional rigidity. By going for a 'bucket' design Microsoft keeps all the electronics and expensive parts in the black chassis, and the sides and back of the handset are a separate plastic case that comes in a variety of colors.

The choice to go with a five-inch qHD screen gives the handset a minimum of parity with low-end Android devices (and a slight advantage in physical size in some cases) but all that size has to be accommodated. The Lumia 535 has been designed to a budget, and it does show. Its low price and powerful facilities (due in part to the lesser specifications required from the hardware because of the design of Windows Phone) meant that dollar-for-dollar it was easy to call the Lumia 520 a success. Primarily through Nokia's expertise in shifting high volumes of low-cost handsets, the Lumia 520 was seen not just as a success for Nokia, but a success for all of Windows Phone. The Windows Phone project, for all the talk of high-end handset, impressive camera specifications, tight integration with enterprise and cloud services, has found much of its success at the low-end of the portfolio. Not that every handset release shouldn't be regarded as critical (it's never too early to start #failing), but the Lumia 535 comes at an important transitional time for the company as it is aimed at a vital market for the continued adoption of Windows Phone. Microsoft's release of the Lumia 535 Windows Phone is a critical moment in the mobile mission of Redmond.
